Seem to recall that there were two pieces to the nut as you describe. Maybe yours got replaced by someone in the machine's past.

Surely the machine was originally designed to climb cut. It's hard to see under the table (unless you've removed it).

I'm trying to remember how the two-piece nut looked. I think it was odd-shaped to stay aligned in its housing. There was a small screw (in one of the nut halves?) to adjust backlash as I remember...
