The best way to measure a spiral bevel tooth would be to map it on a CMM and compare against a correct 3d CAD model, called a digital master. At Spiral Bevel Co we provide correct 3-d CAD models (digital masters) for Gleason, Klingelnberg and other spiral bevel gears. When you machine a spiral bevel gear tooth on 3,4,5-axis CNC you will inspect the finished tooth against our digital master. Most of the modern CNC milling machines allow installing a probe on a machine spindle so you can inspect the gear on the same machine that you used for cutting. The tooth contact can be also inspected virtually, without using a roller tester. At Spiral Bevel Co we have software that simulated correct tooth contact from the tooth surface co-ordinates of real gears.
