cutting position spiral and hypoid gear

Hello, can you help me understand the "cutting position"
for cutting spiral and hypoid gear ?.
 
 
SPIRAL
I usually for cutting spiral gear and pinion gear for use, the measure c + d
I think this is not very accurate, maybe it's the exact dimension "a" (mounting distance) + "b"
 
 
HYPOID
I cut a few times a hypoid gear,
I used to gear c + d,
the pinion I used a + b
a = (mounting distance) measurement revealed on the gearbox
all this is correct?
