Sounds like the main motor is running in reverse. Try this: with the hob swivel outboard support toward the operator, the machine is wired correctly if the hob arbor is turning counterclockwise when viewing from the operators side.

For a right hand hob, the work spindle should be top coming toward the operator. If it's not, then the machine is setup for a left hand hob and you will find an idler in the index gear train. Remove the idler for a right hand hob cutting toward the work spindle.

The hob carriage will feed toward the upright with no idler in the feed train when the index gears are set up for a right hand hob cutting toward the upright. To feed toward the upright with a left hand hob index train with idler, you will also need an idler in the feed train.

Clear as mud?

(Editor: the idlers referred to here are each a single gear on an idler stud, used to reverse rotation only. These do not affect the gear ratio.)
