How Do I Make A Pinion gear for lathe chuck

I was given a 3 jaw - 5 inch chuck to use on my small lathe. It appears to be in nice condition, except that the beveled pinion gear is missing. There is no name on the chuck, so I can't seek out a spare/repair part.
I can fab a new beveled pinion gear if I can calculate the details for the new pinion.
How do I calculate the number of teeth that should
be ground on a pinion?
I have the flat gear that the pinion will engage and can measure the diameter of the mount hole it will reside in and the height off the flat gear.
