Are you climb cutting? That would be table feed in a direction that allows the cutter to "pull" itself into the workpiece. Climb cutting is usually toward the tailstock, but I'm not familiar with a 2 1/2-4 hobber.
The "push back" part doesn't seem to fit a climb cutting situation...
