I have to make some clutch shafts for pulling tractors that are 1 3/4" in diameter and will get 27 16/32 splines cut on them. I am doing this on my old Barber Colman #12 hobber and the length of these shafts is really pushing the limits of the machine. I do not have enough room to use a chuck in the work spindle. I do have a 5c collet setup from my tool and cutter grinder will fit in the hobber and this will allow me to mount the shaft and still get the hob carriage to the end of the splined part. The diameter that will go in the 5c collet is only 11/16". Do you guys think that a 5c collet will hold well enough to hob these shafts when gripping on an 11/16 diameter?
