Hi guys, I had wondered if it was possible to go beyond the machines ability before getting beyond the machines capacity. These are horizontal gear hobbers in good condition, cutting a 6 pitch spur gear. What has got me is that I have cut 3 pitch 52 tooth gears with a 3 inch face that measured 18 inches in diameter, the absolute maximum diameter the machines can handle, slow going but no real problems, 5 passes. The gears I am trying to do now are actually going slower. 7 to 8 passes, the final pass is a light clean up to smooth out the ripples. My backing plates are just under the root diameter. Bill, What do you mean by a bumper? Which side of the gear would it be on? I will try and get some pictures to you. Thank you. Tim
