I am getting a very poor finish on some gears I am currently cutting. 6 DP 96 teeth .875 face width. A36 H.R.S. Newark #3 gear hobbing machines. Starting with sharp cutters but dulling them quickly, speed of cutter 60 rpm. feed of .015 is giving the best of the worst finish. I am getting a lot of vibration resulting in a wavy finish on the tooth flanks. I have backing plates behind the gear blank and even have a clamping plate on the lead-in side. Nothing seems to help. I am getting the exact same results on 2 different machines of the same vintage at the same time. Does any body have any ideas?
