Face width is the distance along the imaginary pitch line measured between toe (smallest tooth end) and heel (largest tooth end). This is according to a drawing specification in "Gleason Straight Bevel Design" dated 1972.
A good approximation of pitch line location (especially in a miter set) is a line half-way between tooth top land and tooth root. Actually, a pitch line is any straight line lying in the pitch cone of a gear (or pinion) where the cone's half-angle is equal to pitch angle.
