If you get the slack out of the feed screw, climb hobbing should not be a problem. But that might be easier said than done.

Think of the wear on the screw rather than the nut. The nut is split and can be adjusted to remove backlash, but the real problem is probably wear on the screw in a small centralized range of travel. If you adjust the nut in the screw's wear zone, the screw will bind outside of the worn area. I think you would need to rework the screw - the adjustable nut may still be serviceable.

Also check for endplay in the feed screw that might be due to worn thrust washers.
