Thanks Dimebag - you're right, it doesn't make any sense. It is time to look into the machine settings you mentioned.
It seems that uneven axial position of cutters or vertical position of work spindle would produce variation in Pressure angle, or at least in contact pattern from flank to flank - what do you think?
If anyone has observed steps in the root surface, please let us know, and what if anything you've done to correct it.
